How Casper Works
Casper is an online situational judgement test that can be taken from anywhere in the world.
Your applicants take the Casper test
Applicants are asked to take the test by programs that make Casper an admissions requirement. They simply visit takecasper.com to create an account, reserve and pay for their test, and then complete it online on their selected test day from the comfort of their own homes.
Your program receives Casper results
Results are sent securely and automatically to your Altus Insights account within two weeks of each test sitting for programs to access.
Your admissions team selects the best candidates
Casper results are reviewed along with other admissions criteria to make better informed decisions on who to invite to interview or into your program.
The Casper Format
The Casper test is a unique situational judgement test that uses timed video-based scenarios, questions, and open text responses to assess an applicant’s people skills.
12 Sections
It’s important to make sure that admissions officers can tap into a wide range of competencies in a variety of scenarios (i.e., work, school, home) for breadth of coverage. That is why the Casper test is 12 sections long with video and written scenarios.
Video-based Scenarios
Research has shown that video-based scenarios demonstrate higher fidelity, are perceived more favourably by applicants and produce more valid scores than the written questions.
Open-Ended Responses
Life is not a multiple-choice test, which is why Casper was designed in an open-ended format to allow test-takers to describe what they would actually do in a given scenario, and more importantly why they would do it.
Timed Responses
Test-takers have five minutes to respond to three open-ended questions pertaining to each scenario. Casper uses timed questions to capture authentic responses, not ones thatare carefully crafted.
Rating Responses
Each section is evaluated by different raters who have been trained and certifiedby us to ensure that theyare providing high-quality scores that are reflectiveof a candidate’s abilities.
Altus Insights: data you can act on
Altus Insights helps your program do more with your assessment data. You can access and download Casper test scores, sort and filter applicants, visualize score distribution patterns to inform decisions, and request demographic analysis so you can understand the make-up of your applicant pool and their performance on Casper. Serving as a single access point for your team, you can control who has access and work together to review the data in one spot. It’s our first step in building a comprehensive toolset for your program to look beyond book smarts and make the best possible people decisions.

Altus Assessments has carefully aligned and mapped constructs to frameworks such as the AAMC Core Competencies, CanMeds and AITSL Teacher Standards and Guidelines.
Normally-Distributed Test Scores
Casper scores fall along a healthy distribution of scores to allow programs to use Casper to both select out poor-performing candidates and identify the exceptional ones.
Test Reliability
The Casper test and Casper scores demonstrate high reliability as evidenced by g-studies and interrater reliabilities, which are consistently checked through quality assurance efforts.
Predictive Validity
Casper scores at the time of admissions have also been shown to predict both short- and long-term performance outcomes, such as multiple-mini interview performance and performance on licensure exams.
